Breast Implant Revision (Explant Surgery)

ABOUT BREAST IMPLANT REVISION SURGERY

Breast implant removal is sought for a range of reasons - implant complications such as rupture or capsular contracture, concern about Breast Implant Illness, a change in aesthetic preference, or simply a desire to return to a natural breast size. Mr Ibrahim approaches these consultations without judgement, taking time to understand each patient's reasons and ensuring that all options - removal alone, removal with lift, or replacement - are discussed openly and thoroughly.

What Breast Implant Removal Involves

Mr Ibrahim will assess your existing implants, the current state of the surrounding capsule, your breast tissue characteristics, and your goals. Imaging such as ultrasound or MRI may be arranged if there is concern about implant integrity. Several approaches are available:

  • Simple explantation: Implant removed through existing incisions, capsule left in place. Quickest approach, appropriate when the capsule is soft and non-problematic.

  • Capsulectomy: Partial or complete removal of the capsule alongside the implant. More involved, but removes potentially thickened or calcified tissue.

  • En bloc capsulectomy: Implant and capsule removed together as one intact unit, without breaching the capsule. More complex and not always technically possible, but preferred by some patients concerned about Breast Implant Illness.

A breast lift, fat grafting, or implant replacement can be added at the same time depending on your anatomy and goals.

Your Recovery

Most patients go home the same day or after one night. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are expected for one to two weeks. A supportive bra is worn for four to six weeks, with strenuous activity avoided during this period. If capsulectomy was performed, recovery tends to take a little longer. Breast appearance continues to settle over three to six months.

Risks & Complications from Breast Implant Removal Surgery

As with any surgery, breast implant removal carries risks. Mr Ibrahim discusses these thoroughly at consultation so you can make a fully informed decision. Risks include:

  • Infection, bleeding, or haematoma

  • Seroma — fluid collection in the implant pocket

  • Breast shape changes including volume loss, sagging, or asymmetry

  • Skin wrinkling due to loss of implant volume

  • Scarring

  • Need for additional surgery

  • Persistent symptoms if removal was sought for Breast Implant Illness

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What will my breasts look like after removal?

This depends on how long implants were in place, their size, your skin quality, and whether additional procedures are performed. Mr Ibrahim will give you an honest, realistic picture during consultation.

  • Should I have the capsule removed?

Mr Ibrahim will advise based on capsule condition and your reasons for seeking removal. If the capsule is soft and non-problematic, leaving it to contract naturally is a reasonable option.

  • Will removing implants help with Breast Implant Illness symptoms?

Some women report improvement after explantation. The evidence is still developing, and Mr Ibrahim will discuss this with you honestly and without making guarantees.
